LOL
Both machines do everything that he needs them to do.

A beautifully soft OS, if a little stubborn at times.. the quaint
'quartered' GUI.. the Unrecoverable Application Error.. only 10
diskettes (including DOS) and you were back in business, messing with
autoexec.bat and it's three sidekicks, mem /c was our friend, programs
supplied on
5.25in floppies that would run in 8k..
It all sounds a whole bunch better than the reality, and seems oh so

Gotcha, Mike.
On a similar note about ancient operating systems. My cousin bought
another
used machine. He now has two machines with Windows 3.1, not even
3.11.
;-)
I messed around with one of them over the holidays and it's amazing
what is
still in XP from the 3.1 days.

There is a patch on the way for users of Win 98/ME too.. just not
today..

I asked in the 'other' security group.. assuming that the latest WMF
patch has been installed, Al Jarvi seems to think that it is ok to
re-register the dll in the event that the work around was
implemented
a
few days ago..
For Windows 9x/ME users, the workaround still holds good..
So, for all XP users who un-registered the dll a few days ago, go to
START - RUN and type in the following line to get back full access
to
Picture and Fax Viewer..
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
... But please ensure that you have been here first and downloaded
the patch

Hi Mike,
I have XP Pro SP1 and I have the new MS patch (912919).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-001.mspx
My shimgvw.dll was never unregistered. My Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer works fine.
So I assume that the MS patch never unregistered shimgvw.dll in the
first place. Unregistering shimgvw.dll is listed as a workaround,
not
part of the fix.
[[Microsoft has tested the following workaround. While this
workaround
will
not correct the underlying vulnerability, it will help block known
attack vectors. Unregister the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
(Shimgvw.dll)]]

That does work, but is it wise?.. are we to assume that the MS
patch will
prevent the exploit even with the dll registered?..
There have been many articles, some conflicting in advice given..
certainly, for users of Win 9x, the patch is useless, but I think
that unregistering the dll works..
Maybe an expert would like to step in and clarify these points..

Try this:
Click Start |Click Run | Paste: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll |
Click
OK
If that doesn't work, make sure Preview default is set correctly.
When you open an image file in Windows XP the default action is
to
preview it using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

After I applied the latest patch, I do not have Microsoft
Picture
and
Fax Viewer available to open up JPEGs and/or GIFs. It is not in
the
file
association list of programs. Does Microsoft wipe out this
altogether
with
the patch? Can someone tell me what has happened?
Thanks,
