After I applied the latest patch, I do not have Microsoft Picture and Fax
Viewer available to open up JPEGs and/or GIFs. It is not in the file
association list of programs. Does Microsoft wipe out this altogether with
the patch? Can someone tell me what has happened?

Thanks,
Sweet-P

Try this:

Click Start |Click Run | Paste: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll | Click OK

If that doesn't work, make sure Preview default is set correctly.

When you open an image file in Windows XP the default action is to preview
it using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

That does work, but is it wise?.. are we to assume that the MS patch will
prevent the exploit even with the dll registered?..

There have been many articles, some conflicting in advice given.. certainly,
for users of Win 9x, the patch is useless, but I think that unregistering
the dll works..

Maybe an expert would like to step in and clarify these points..

Yes, that is what I would like to know too...I was wondering if the patch
from Microsoft still is working after I associate Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer back with my image files...someone please inform us!

Thanks,
Paulette

Hi Mike,

I have XP Pro SP1 and I have the new MS patch (912919).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-001.mspx

My shimgvw.dll was never unregistered. My Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
works fine.

So I assume that the MS patch never unregistered shimgvw.dll in the first
place. Unregistering shimgvw.dll is listed as a workaround, not part of
the fix.

[[Microsoft has tested the following workaround. While this workaround will
not correct the underlying vulnerability, it will help block known attack
vectors. Unregister the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (Shimgvw.dll)]]

I asked in the 'other' security group.. assuming that the latest WMF patch
has been installed, Al Jarvi seems to think that it is ok to re-register the
dll in the event that the work around was implemented a few days ago..

For Windows 9x/ME users, the workaround still holds good..

So, for all XP users who un-registered the dll a few days ago, go to START -
RUN and type in the following line to get back full access to Picture and
Fax Viewer..

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

.... But please ensure that you have been here first and downloaded the patch

Gotcha, Mike.

On a similar note about ancient operating systems. My cousin bought another
used machine. He now has two machines with Windows 3.1, not even 3.11. ;-)

I messed around with one of them over the holidays and it's amazing what is

Try this:

Click Start |Click Run | Paste: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll | Click
OK

If that doesn't work, make sure Preview default is set correctly.

When you open an image file in Windows XP the default action is to
preview it using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

He may also have some Model T parts laying around, he's a machinist and

A beautifully soft OS, if a little stubborn at times.. the quaint

It all sounds a whole bunch better than the reality, and seems oh so

Gotcha, Mike.

On a similar note about ancient operating systems. My cousin bought
another
used machine. He now has two machines with Windows 3.1, not even
3.11.
;-)

I messed around with one of them over the holidays and it's amazing
what is
still in XP from the 3.1 days.

There is a patch on the way for users of Win 98/ME too.. just not
today.. :-)

Wesley

I asked in the 'other' security group.. assuming that the latest WMF
patch has been installed, Al Jarvi seems to think that it is ok to
re-register the dll in the event that the work around was
implemented
a
few days ago..

For Windows 9x/ME users, the workaround still holds good..

So, for all XP users who un-registered the dll a few days ago, go to
START - RUN and type in the following line to get back full access
to
Picture and Fax Viewer..

regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

... But please ensure that you have been here first and downloaded
the patch

Hi Mike,

I have XP Pro SP1 and I have the new MS patch (912919).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-001.mspx

My shimgvw.dll was never unregistered. My Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer works fine.

So I assume that the MS patch never unregistered shimgvw.dll in the
first place. Unregistering shimgvw.dll is listed as a workaround,
not
part of the fix.

[[Microsoft has tested the following workaround. While this
workaround
will
not correct the underlying vulnerability, it will help block known
attack vectors. Unregister the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
(Shimgvw.dll)]]

That does work, but is it wise?.. are we to assume that the MS
patch will
prevent the exploit even with the dll registered?..

There have been many articles, some conflicting in advice given..
certainly, for users of Win 9x, the patch is useless, but I think
that unregistering the dll works..

Maybe an expert would like to step in and clarify these points..
