You are trying to use a CD the same way you use a harddisk.
With CDs that is only possible with special software, like eg. Nero's InCD
(
http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php); a so called Packet Writing software
and you need to use CD-RW media.
With that type of software your CD needs to be formatted first (can take a
long time to complete), loses a substantial amount of 'usable' space on it
and can only be read on PC's.
If you want to write to a CD and later add to it you can do that with CD
burning software like eg. Nero Burning ROM and start the writing process as
a multisession CD and use CD-R or CD-RW media. Multisession simply means you
can write additional stuff to it in another, subsequent, writing session,
until the CD is full.
With the first method you can delete files from the CD just like you would
from a HD and the CD space is reused.
With the second method you can 'delete' existing stuff from the CD, but the
space will not be reusable, no matter if you used CD-R or CD-RW media. There
is however a slight difference. The CD-R media will eventually become
'full', even if you deleted stuff, because essentially 'deleting' will only
erase parts of the table of contents on the CD and thereby leave the
dataspace 'unreachable'.
With CD-RW media the same thing happens, but you can erase the entire disk
(all sessions, all files and folders on it) and re-use the media.
