I have a Belkin USB Wireless (802.11b) card, and I've been trying to get it
to work with my WAP. As a side note, my coworker has a Linksys PCMCIA card
and has the same issues.

The problem is, with Windows Wireless manager, I cannot connect to the WAP.
We are using WEP (128 bit) and not broadcasting the SSID. Using Belkins 3rd
party manager, things worked fine until the manager itself went cabloey on
me. But the WEP won't take a passphrase, it must have the HEX chars,
annoying, but cool.

Basically, anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sueffel

Hi Sueffel,

Thanks for your posting. If I understand correctly, you cannot connect to
your WAP using Windows Wireless Connection Manager, but you can connect to
the WAP using the third-party connection manager. I'd like to refer to this
article first:
313242 How to Troubleshoot Wireless Network Connections in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313242

1. Check the HCL to determine if there is a Windows XP-compatible driver
that is available for your wireless adapter.
* If there is a compatible driver, install the updated driver before you
perform any of the following troubleshooting procedures.
* If there is not a compatible driver, you may be able to use the network
adapter, but the configuration and functionality may be very limited.
2. Determine if the driver that you are using recognizes the Windows XP
Wireless Zero Configuration service:
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet
Connections.
2. Click Network Connections, right-click Wireless Connection, and then
click Properties.
3. View the available options:
* If you do not see the Wireless Connection icon in the Network Connections
folder, or if you cannot view the properties, there is a problem with the
driver for the wireless network adapter. To troubleshoot this problem, see
the "Driver Installation Issues" section in this article.
* If you can view the properties for the Wireless Connection icon, but you
do not see a Wireless Networks tab, see the "Drivers That Do Not Support
the Wireless Zero Configuration Service" section in this article to
continue troubleshooting.
* If you can view the properties, and you can see and access the Wireless
Networks tab, see the "Drivers That Support the Wireless Zero Configuration
Service" section in this article to continue troubleshooting.

Hi William

Please excuse my jumping onto this thread

I am having very similar issues with a new Netgear wireless install. At first I could use the netgear client utility and was able to input a wep key string, set constant output power and some other things that the XP utility doesn't appear to support. But for the past few days, everytime I attempt to launch the netgear config utility, an error report is generated and the utility doesn't open

I've even removed, re-installed, disabled the xp wireless zero config service at startup and as well as stopped it. But still no luck in running the netgear client config utility

Any ideas

Thank

Ed

I would like to add a similar problem also. I have a new install of Win XP home on a Dell 4000 which contains a Dell TrueMobile wireless card. I have just updated with all the latest windows updates. I do not have Q811493 or Q811114 loaded

The access point is a Linksys Wap11. If I disable wep everything works fine. If I enable 64 bit wep on both machines with a new wep key it also works fine. (for a while

The problem happens when you turn the laptop off. It will never connect to the network correctly again. The TrueMobil utitility says there is good signal strength. The two terminals show up in the task bar but if you open up wireless networking page there is a big red X throught the terminals. There were no changes at all made to network settings between the time this worked and when it did not work. The only thing that changed was a power cycle

If you do an ipconfig it tells you that the media adapter is not connected

If I change the wep key on both ends it will login again just once. It works great unitl you cycle power on the laptop

I have now tried this same setup with an old Sony laptop running XP Pro. It was tested using the same Dell TrueMobile roadio card. It fails in exactly the same way. If you turn off wep it runs just fine.

If I move my antenna a few inches it logs on just fine to my neighbors connection which is not using wep. I can see why there are so many unprotected connections around.

Any ideas would be appreciated as I have now spent about 8 hours working on this problem and searching the web for wisdom. It appears to me like there is a problem in the XP TCIP stack which allows only one login if you are using wep 64

Thank

Wilton

Well, my problem was solved by reloading my machine. Anyhew, SP2 is
supposed to fix all these screwups with the Wirerless stuff. Should be
interesting.

My problem was solved by going backwards 3 revisions on the firmware on the WAP11. The one I was running was something like 1.17a. The current one on the Linksys site was 1.14i. After trying everything else I could think of, I downloaded the version they are now calling current. It all works just the way it should. This has taken me about a week of spare time.
