Wireless Zero Configuration needs to be started manually. Why?!

Problem: Occasionally from Windows XP users cannot
browse for wi-fi networks, advanced functions are just
grayed out in wi-fi config.

solution: Going into Computer Management then Services
and starting the Wireless Zero Configuration service. At
this point all wi-fi functions are back again.

This happens occasionally, but really, should it be
happening at all? At first I thought that maybe this was
wi-fi card specific until users were calling in who use
totally different cards (Netgear WG511T/WAB501, Linksys
g/b pccards, MICROSOFT B/G PC Cards) and on different wi-
fi routers. Different laptops (Thinkpads, Sony Vaio's
and Dell Latitude's) have been used all occasionally
losing the ability to do anything wi-fi until manually
starting the wireless zero configuration service. I have
no problem with this but in an office environment where
many users are depending on wi-fi to communicate remotely
to the home office it would be nice to know that the wi-
fi component of their os would work reliably. But hey
this is why i've got a job, eh?

Is the Wireless Zero Configuration service set to start automatically
or manually?

Are there any relevant messages in Event Viewer?

The configuration utilities for some wireless cards turn off the
Wireless Zero Configuration service.
