Wireless NIC now disconnects after 2-5 minutes

I've been using an Orinoco Wireless NIC successfully for
two years. About 2-3 weeks ago, I noticed that its link
is terminated after a few minutes. A balloon pops up to
say that One or more wireless networks are available...
but when I click on that there is only mine. The Connect
button on that screen does not reconnect. I can
reconnect by physically popping the nic out of the PMCIA
slot and reinserting it. The lights on the nic are
active. I execute Windows Update regularly and believe
there is something in an update that triggered this
situation. This has made even the simplest work at home
very tiresome. I went to the Proxim site but there does
not appear to be anything new there. Any one have a clue?

My hunch is new radio interference in the house/neighbourhood which is
causing the radio link to drop. Radio signals on these units are quite
week. I don't think anything from Windows update would be the root-cause.

Perhaps a neighbour is broadcasting on the same channel? Anybody nearby
get a new wireless access point?

Try putting your two devices closer together (within a few feet) to see
if closer distances resolves this.

Thanks for the input Rob, I'm sitting 4 feet from the
Residential Gateway (access point) and the signal is at
100%. The problem occurs 24x7. I'd assume the microwave
problem occurs only when it is in use.

Make sure that you have the 802.1x tab unselected under the
Authentication tab for your wireless network.. From time to time,
Windows "forgets" this and re-enables the 802.1x tab which results in
a behavior like what you describe.
