I have a peer to peer system. My home pc and laptop pc are talking using an
I.P. that I've designated. My wirless connectivity is good. I don't know if
I'm missing something, but I've made access to some files by sharing them.
How do I view those files from either computer since they are on the same
network. I know that I've probably missed something. The computers are
connecting. That's not the issue. Viewing shared folders from either
computer is the boggling question. Thanks.

I'm sorry. I am running Windows XP home on both machines. I just need to be
able to access shared folders, printers, and internet connectivity. I have a
lynk sys pci installed on my home pc. Thanks.

Tim,

If you're having problems viewing shared folders, there are a number of things
you should be checking. Start with my troubleshooting guide.

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Disable Windows Firewall - if you use Linksys router, it has a better
firewall.

Find out the other computer name (@My Computer) Then just goto:
Search/Computers or People/A Computer on the Network/Computer name

Double click on the computer found and your shared folder will appear - open
it from there.

The problem is still occuring. I've troubleshot the situation using the tips
on the wesite from Chuck, I turned off the firewall from Windows. I searched
for the computer using search. The only folders showing up in the local
network is the shared folders on that particular computer. Any suggestions?
I know that the two are talking that isn't a problem. The two computer names
are the names in (Home) next to the shared files right? I am getting
frustrated. I thought that this was going to be easier than it has turned
out. I hope I don't sound like a whiner, but, I don't like to consume one
hundred percent of my time with pc's anymore and am finding it hard not to
unless I come up with a solution.

Thanks.

Tim,

We can help you, but you have to provide feedback to our help. Look at some of
the other threads in this forum. Your problem isn't unique. Help us to help
you.

The following folders can not be shared over a network from a PC with XP Home:
1. C:\Windows
2. C:\Programs
3. C:\Documents and Settings\Username

You will need to go deeper into the folder directory or "tree" and share that folder itself. So if you wanted to share the templates for a word processing program such as "WriteMe", and they are located in the program folder:
C:\Program Files\WriteMe

You will need to set sharing for the folder:
C:\Program Files\WriteMe\Templates

You can also create a folder outside the Program Files folder directory or "tree". Copy the contents of the the folder that you want to share to it.

For the printer sharing:
1. On the PC that the printer is connected to:
a. In the Printer Folder>Right click the printer icon > Properties> Sharing tab:
b. Make sure that you select Share this printer.
c. Make sure that the "shared" printer name is less than 12 characters long, and that there are no spaces in the name. During the printer driver/software installation, some install programs will add a space in the name of the printer. Especially model that was originally designed for Win98.

2. On the Networked PC, with the printer on, and the printer drivers/software are installed on this PC. (**The following is the method I use when reinstalling a printer to my home network, others may do this part differently**).
a. In the Printer folder> Right-click icon & Delete the Printer listed there.
b. Select Add Printer> Browse to & Select the printer on the other PC> OK> and finish the printer.

3. Make sure you that you allow "files and printing" sharing.
a. On any of your firewall programs, such as Windows firewall, Zone Alarm, McAfee, Norton, etc...
b. If you are using a router, check the settings pages, to make sure that folder and printer sharing is allowed.

I would try making a new test folder, place a test doc into it, and share it
with everyone; and do the same (w/different names) in other pc(s), and share
with everyone. Then make sure you have the computer name right
by right clicking on My Computer/go to properies/select Computer Name Tab,
and note Full computer name.
Now do the search... see the Test folder? Now open it and the test doc
should be there too.

O.K. I can now access the files from my home pc, many thanks of the
troubleshooting guide and much persistance I got it to work. But, one
question: I made my Internet Connection Shared on my home pc so how do I
connect with the laptop wirelessly? Thanks for all the help.

Does the laptop connect to the Internet? Can the laptop see the other computer?
Take a look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a
start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Thanks again to all. What I ended up doing is: sharing the internet
connection on home pc with network, then on my laptop I went into the TCP/IP
properties and made the default gateway the IP of my home pc. For the DNS
primary and secondary I put in my ISP's DNS. After that I was able to
connect to the internet on laptop through my home pc. Now, thanks to
everyone's help in this forum, I can share files, print to printer, and
connect to internet from laptop to homepc from anywhere in the house on my
wireless network. Thanks again. I'm glad that there are IT professionals in
the world willing to lend and teach with a helping hand.
