I am trying to share folders and a printer on my wireless
home network, both computers running XP. Each computer has
a different name, and I believe I have joined them to the
same workgroup by naming the workgroup "xyz". I have done
this by clicking properties under My computer, and then
going to computer name.

Both the folders and the printer have been shared.

On the computer NOT directly hooked up to the printer, when
I go to My Network Place, then choose View Workgroup
Computers, I get the error message '"xyz" (workgroup name)
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact system administrator.'

I cannot see the shared printer or the shared folders.
What have I done wrong, and where will I look for these
things once I have this configured correctly? I would
assume My Network Places, but am I assuming wrong?

TIA
Kim

Not enough Information.

You need to read about 20 pages of help.
The router setup and configuration.
home networking.
sharing printers, installing a shared printer.
Permissions for users.
Local User accounts.

and much much more,

XP or Home,

....

SJ

make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks" under Local Area Connection Properties is
checked...hope this helps

Hello

I agree we need more info sorry
can you ping the other machine??

go into cmd.exe then type ipconfig on one machine
find the ip address

then go to the other machine
go into cmd.exe then type ping the that address
this will tell you if there is a link there

if it says host unreachable then there is no link
at the moment

also what is the ip of the router?? try ping that

To start you need to create identical accounts with the same password on
both machines.

Most Wireless Router/wireless network card setups work correctly
"out of the box". If you haven't "messed" with any settings yet,
try the following.

1. Can you access the router from all computers?
- open Internet Explorer
- in the address box type an IP address similar to the following...
192.168.0.1 (this is for a DLink router)
192.168.1.1 (this is for a Linksys router)
etc. - check your router manual for the correct address

If you get a login screen, you have successful comunication with
the router, skip step 2 and go to step 3. If not, continue to step
2.

2. Make sure that any software firewalls are turned off

3. If DHCP is being used, be sure to setup all workstations
accordingly.

4. If a fixed IP address is being used for all workstations, make
sure that the router is setup accordingly (most routers default to
"DHCP" unless you have changed it)

5. On the wireless workstations, the "SID" and "channel" must match
that of the router. Check to make sure.

There are more things to try... these are a start.

If you're not sure how to do any of the above post back (I didn't
want to write a book).
