Installed router with card on desktop unit. Using laptop with built in
wireless router can use some help now how to access desktop unit from
laptop and vice versa. Tried creating a folder but can only see the things
that are copied to folder on either machine. Would like to be able to access
hard drive on desktop unit from laptop and vice versa. Is this possible?.

Also folder created for desktop unit when I click on My Network Places on
the laptop at times disappears and after a while will appear again. Is this
normal?.
Any help appreciated.

You are setting up a network between two computers. You need to make sure
that both the desktop and laptop are part of the same "WORKGROUP" and that
each has the user account/password from the other.

Hey Stan,

In advance an answer to your second question. Yes it is normal to see the
object appear and dissappear and reappear the computer is refreshing its
connections so to speak and it takes the shortcut away while it does that.

To access the hard drives on either computer you must share the drives. Go
into your my computer right click your hard drive and click properties > go
to the sharing tab > Share the drive and name it if you wish, also check the
security tab if you have xp pro and make sure to add the everyone group and
checkmark the boxes that you want it to be able to do that way you don't run
into issues with accessing it. Do this on both computers in order to see the
drives. Also I would be very careful in doing this over a wireless router.
Other people could come into your unprotected network and cause havok. Make
sure you check into how to secure your wireless network.
