I have a new laptop with built-in wireless as well as a port to plug in a
network cable. I've found that if I don't plug in the network cable until
after the computer is turned on, Windows does not detect the new connection.
It's not a wireless lan, and I have that piece ignored, so I thought that
would make things so I could just plug the cord into the nic port and be all
set ... but have to reboot ... obviously the thing to do is to plug the cord
in before powering on ... but that step is sometimes missed. Is there a way
to set this up so that we don't have to reboot?

Thanks,

In XP it should work as you want, once the LAN is set up the first time.

Make sure your TCP/IP setup is correct -- automatic or with a static IP address,
as you prefer.

Okay, thanks for the reply, I think there will be a learning curve for me
on this one. --Jim
