Hi all,

I'd like to be able to go from my wired ethernet to wifi (both linked to the
same router) without losing any connectivity (i.e. without losing mirc, MSN
etc.). Is there anyway to do this with windows xp tablet 2005?

Depends more on the specific machine and vendor-provided software than anything
else...

My IBM T-42 has outstanding LAN management software! It allows you to set up
profiles that include any combination of wired, wireless, and dial-up
connections, and set the connection priority. At home, wired has Pri 1, and it
switched automatically to WiFi if I unplug the Ethernet cable. For a particular
hotel where I use WiFi by default, it will lock on to the particular router if
available, or fall back to wired or dial-up if necessary.

In a simple routed, wired / wireless, home network, probably not. Whenever you
disconnect or reconnect the network cable, while a (network level) conversation
is active, you risk dropped packets. Any time this happens, your computer could
cause the server at the other end of the (application level) conversation
becoming confused, and dropping the connection.

Given a properly setup network metric, you should be able to automatically
switch back and forth between the Ethernet and WiFi connections. But that won't
guarantee no dropped packets, if you're in the middle of an application
conversation.
