I have just had installed a wired router -my question is A. do i keep it on
when my pc is off ?(i was told to by installer) and B. do i have to change
its password ( i was told no as someone would have to be in the house to use
it )

Leave it on all the time if you want to. Presume you haven't got a network
yet.

A. Yes. There is no need to turn the router off.

B. Yes. It is foolish to leave the router administration password with
the default user/password. Change it to something of your own and write
it down somewhere.

I leave my DSL Modem and Linksys Router on 24/7. The amount of power used is
miniscule.

This also avoids any powerup problems they may encounter.

The choice is yours.
Save the planet! and turn it off. But the usage is so small, my personal
view is leave it on.
Bear in mind that you could set up a voip telephone via the router too and
this does not need the PC switched on. Useful device. Search for this on
the internet if interested - not certain of your country to recommend any
providers. But you get VFM service.

You'll want to leave the router turned on so that it doesn't lose the
IP address assigned to it by your ISP.

As for the password, only a complete idiot would leave any "security"
setting at the default. In this case, anyone who can access the website
of that router's manufacturer would be able to determine it's default
password, and , with a little effort, hack it.

I'm assuming the OP was talking about a wired broadband router in
this, but....

The router (in my assumption above) does not receive an IP from the
ISP. The broadband modem does. The router just knows what the modem
has an assigned IP address.
