How can I "wipe" all of the contents from a USB key to make sure that
nothing could be retrieved?

Reformat the USB Key Drive. Unlike a hard disk (magnetic media) when you
format a thumb drive, there is no way to retrieve previous information from
the drive. It "is" clean.

But how do you reformat it?

Just deleting everything would be sufficient. Since there is no magnetism
involved, nothing can grab the deleted information.
