My computer, a Dell Dimension 4550, recently caught a
virus. Even though it came installed with Windows XP home
edition, the computer asked me to insert the XP disk so
it could perform an undgrade to reinstall missing
components.

Having done this, the computer has now reinstalled XP and
wiped all my existing files, games, dowloads, etc.

However, while everything else can be reinstalled, I need
those word docs etc back.

Is there any way I can get the files back? I've been told
that hard drives are never completely wiped and the
information should still be on there.

What do I need to do/ who do I need to see to get my hard
drive looked at?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

That only applies where the Clusters that the original files
occupied aren't over written with new data. The more you
use the PC, the chances of recovery diminish.
Just do a Google for "Data Recovery" there are a number
of tools and programs designed to do what you seek.
If your are able to recovery the files, I would recommend
an immediate backup of your data.

Hi

If you have a Recovery disk, then the hard disk may have been reformatted.
However, you may be able to recover some files with a 3rd party program:
