where is the zip program located for windows xp home?

The inbuilt program is part of file explorer, it is not a separate program
like WinZip (in your subject). What are you trying to do?

I am trying to associate a file to be opened by it.

Do a search for WinAce on Google. It handles all compression formats and is
a free download.

that does not show up.

Perhaps you install (and maybe uninstalled later) another zip archive
program. After you uninstalled it, you lost the filetype association for
..zip files.

The built-in .zip support in Windows XP uses the zipfldr.dll file with its
callable set of functions. Installing another zip program could change the
registry to point at that product for .zip support, and uninstalling it
leaves you with nothing to support .zip files.

Try reregistering the zipfldr file, as below, at a DOS prompt:

cd %windir%\system32
regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Since WinAce costs $29 (or more if you include DOS version, too), I doubt it
is free. It is probably shareware but you ARE expected to pay for it if you
continue to use it. A product that doesn't expire or cripple itself after
some trial period doesn't make it freeware. Do you have a copy of the
license that says the product is free despite the fact that its authors are
charging for the software?

They slipped that one by me. I downloaded and installed WinAce. It
looks quite nice and is a lot better than WinZip. Then I saw the
register.txt file.

I have been using IZARC for several years and like it very
much.
