WinXPPro+SP2 sound hardware detection error

I have a Toshiba Satellite 3005-S303 notebook that came with WinME and a
free upgrade to WinXPHome, This machine has a Crystal sound chip, and
the sound always worked in WinMe and in WinXPHome --and even when I
installed XPHome from scratch (not by reinstalling WinME and updating to
XP) when the original hard disk crashed and I replaced it by another one.

The new hard disk recently developed read errors that prevented Windows
from booting, so after wiping and testing the drive I took the
opportunity to install WinXPPro+SP2 (Academic) for my high-schooler.

So far everything works except the sound: WinXPPro insists that the
sound chip is an Intel 80201 BA/BAM and installs the driver for it but
then complains that the driver does not work. I have tried uninstalling
the Intel sound driver and selecting the Crystal one manually, but that
does not work either. And whenever I reboot the machine Windows
reinstalls the Intel driver.

How do I get the sound back on this machine?

Whether you vote Democrat or Republican in November, the country will
still be run from boardrooms in the USA and elsewhere, not by your
elected representatives.

Try going to the Toshiba web site and look for and downlaod any XP drivers
for your model.

Nothing on the Toshiba site, but Google led me to a working driver at
DriverGuide.com (registration required) that somebody had found at a
Fujitsu site in Germany and uploaded.
