WinXP Won't Start Correctly

Last week, my computer for no apparent reason got to where it wouldn't
bootup correctly. It would hang with the opening WinXP-Home Edition screen.
Part of the time I could boot in Safe Mode than shut down and it would boot
correctly. It got to where that wouldn't even work.

I have a Creative WMA Player (USB) and I think prior to my problems I shut
the computer down with this device plugged in. After the computer was off I
disconnected the device. Could this have messed up WinXP?

Any ideas on how to correct the problem I'm having?
 
Thanks for your suggestion Ted. I did try this already and it didn't make
any difference. The computer wouldn't boot in this mode either.
 
Have you tried plugging the USB device back in and
restarting? I'd try that also. Then, when you are ready -
click the "safely remove USB devices" icon on the
taskbar and "officially" remove the device before
shutting down again.
 
If you recently installed sp2, and you have usb printer fax, or other device,
you may have to de-install the driver using device manager. Need help? Open
up help and support and search for "using device driver" Open it up. Scroll
down to Universal Serial Bus and open the +. Double click Generic Usb Hub.
Open the power tab. Your offending device may be there. Or open other hubs
and check power tab.

When you find your device, open driver tab and un-install it.
Disconnect usb cable for the device. Install your drivers for the
device(from cd). Re-connect cable usb to device. Reboot. And Add Hardware
will recognize the device at boot up.
 
I did run a System Restore...didn't make a difference. I also did a Repair
Installation which lasted about 2 days! Still other problems. Last night I
resorted to a clean install and getting SP2 installed first. So far so
good...we'll see...
 
Seems I have a start up issue also.Loaded Sp2 with the CD with no luck even
though MS said I was ready to install.Well I wiped taht clean with a new
install and let Windows update Down load SP2.Well now WindowsXP will not load
when I turn on the computer initially,but will load after I manually shut
down and hit mash the button a second time.Any help out there?
 
I had a same problem with starting up my labtop computer after installing the
XP SP2. It took a long time or never reached to the starting screen, staying
as a total blank forever.

Should I better remove SP2 or any fix to it? Does my Trendmicro antivirus
sofware interfere with SP2?

First thing I would try is some clean boot troubleshooting to see if
some program or service is causing a proglem.

If that does do it, it could be that something was wrong with your
system before you installed SP2. If things aren't working perfectly,
then upgrading to SP2 can make things work. If your still having
trouble, remove sp2, then properly prepare your system and then install
SP2 again.
