I have installed WinXP-Pro on an old Dell 933Mhz P3
machine with a new WD 250 Gb IDE drive. The drive is
connected to a Promise Ultra100 TX2 controller that came
with the drive. After installation the system rebooted
and ran and I continued to set up software. Later I
realized the WinXP CD was still in the drive and removed
it. When I rebooted without the WinXP CD the message
returned: "No boot device found, system halted" If I put
the WinXP CD back in the drive everything boots and works
fine. Has anybody had this problem?

Try installing xp cd,boot to cd,press F6 when the text appear
to install software/drivers for promise.

I did that, twice in fact. The system boots and works
like it is booting from the HD as long as the CD is in
the drive. All of the software I installed works fine.
But if I remove the CD the system will not boot.
