Hi,
I have a would-be client (some kind of old fashioned administration) whose
PCs are mainly Windows XP Home, and which is connected by a VPN to a main
office abroad whose server is Windows 3.11 (!!!). So I was told.

Before I embark in that adventure, I'd like to know:
- which network protocol(s) were used by Win 3.11, what is the best way to
connect XP clients to that?
- is it possible to setup a W2K domain, in addition to whatever existing
Windows3.11 domain, would that not conflict?
- if you know some resources on Win3.11. I'm mainly interested in the
networking stuff.

TIA

I suggest you start by finding out what they really have. It is extremely
unlikely that this "server" is a Windows 3.11 PC. AFAIK, there was
no VPN under Windows 3.11. Furthermore there would be no virus
protection, no support and no updates. Networking was quite painful.

If this is a Windows 3.11 machine then toss it out now - it would cost
you a fortune to maintain it and there is next to nobody left who could
maintain it.

Win 3.11 was the first version of Windows to have a MS TCP/IP stack
available and a basic peer-to-peer networking system, prior to this you
needed a 3rd party stack. However, the defaults were

IPX/SPX compatible with NetBIOS
Microsoft NetBEUI

if you wanted "native" TCP/IP you had to install the TCP/IP-32 add-on.

There is no such thing as a Win 3.11 domain. Win 3.11 is a desktop operating
system. You get workgroups with 3.11 (hence it's name of Windows for
Workgroups)

Are you sure they are using Win 3.11, and not Windows NT 3.1/3.5/3.51? Or
even possibly Netware 3.11 (wow, that's taking me back a long time) which
*is* a network operating system (in which case you're looking at IPX).

I bet it's NT3.5. WFW3.11 was *NOT* a server OS and, as you have stated,
networking was almost non-existent. When I took a summer job in my father's
company, just after I left school, I was left struggling with a Windows v3
box - and was forced to use it until I left (I was a receptionist and it
wasn't considered necessary for me to have access to the latest technology -
they were afraid I'd nip out to what ever Electronics Boutique was called
before it became EB) and sit there playing games all day... I did anyway -
it's amazing what you can find as 'abandonware'.... ;o)

They eventually dispensed of my services and went to a fully-automated
voicemail system. Then the company was dispensed with altogether...

Thanks. My first task will be to discover what these people really use :-;
