Winxp <> Win98 no network

I have my main PC as a dual boot beween win2k and winxp. My second PC is win98se
only.
I have a lan between win98se and win2k, but only if I install Netbui. Without
NetBui, then no lan, even tho' I have TCP/IP installed.

Anyway, after getting much everything else sorted in winxp, I see my lan is not
there. That is, neither winxp nor win98se can see each other, but data is
flowing between the 2 machines, at least according to the 2pc icon in the
taskbar.
I see that NetBui is not available to install on Winxp, so how do I get my lan
working again?

Thanks

Try Installing an IPX/SPX protocol on both Xp and 98SE. That did it for me,
should do it for you aswell.

Hope this helps,

Greetings --

You've a couple options.

My recommendation would be to remove NetBEUI from the mix and
simply configure your various PCs' TCP/IP settings correctly.

On the WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with password(s),
that have the desired access privileges to the desired shares. Log on
to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will be able to
access the designated shares, provided your network is configured
properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall is disabled
on the internal LAN connection.

On the Win2K PC, create local user account(s), with password(s),
that have the desired access privileges to the desired shares. Log on
to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will be able to
access the designated shares, provided your network is configured
properly.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

Configuring Windows 2000 Professional to Work in a Peer-to-Peer
Network

And you really needn't use more than a single protocol on all of
the machines. If you requires Internet access, TCP/IP is necessary,
so that's normally the one to use.

If, however, you decide that you want to use the old, unrouteable
NetBEUI, anyway, install it.

Hi Ben, thanks for that.
I installed IPX/SPX protocol on both machines, and now the win98se machine can
see the winxp machine but not vice versa.
Each machine can ping each other ok.
What next?

Thanks

Hi Bruce, thanks for the links etc, but I seem to have something not quite right
from this page:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

I don't have the 'Advanced' or 'WINS' tabs when I click 'properties' of my High
Speed or Lan connection' in Network Connections. I do in my win2k system but not
in winxp. For the Internet connection, I have a 'Gateway'

Oh, after installing IPX/SPX as per another help post, the Win98 machine can now
see the winxp machine , but not vice versa.

Thanks
