suddenly windows XP pro started to report unexpected errors with
explorer seconds after I started it. I Tried to run an windows update
on explorer to check whether I needed an update or not! I believe
that my explorer is up to date!

At the next reboot The minute xp i finished loading I get the
unexpected error message with explorer agian, and no icons appears on
my desktop. When I try to launch something from the task manager I get
an unexpected error messsage for that program as well... So for the
moment I cannot access any program or file without causing an
unexpected error...

Are there anybody that might have a clue about what I can do??
Is it perhaps a virus or a hardware error..

Thanx Rene

Are you talking about Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer?

If it is Internet Explorer, try to go to Control Panel->Internet
Option->Advance
1) Uncheck the "Enable Third Party Extension..." something and see if it
help.
2) Look at the Security if it is not all "Default" level, click each of the
"Zone" and click the "Default Level" button.

If it is Windows Explorer, check the Event Log to see what it says there
first.

Well actually it is both...!! And every other program I try to start.
After startup I get nothing but my background picture and an
unexpected error message. If I want to start a program I have to "run"
it from the task manager, and the second I launch a program, or the
explorers, it returns an unexpected error dialog box and shuts down
the program. Even my task manager sometimes makes an unexpected
error...!!!

I cannot access any of the things you suggest, because every attempt
to start anything is an unexpected error!!

If it worked before, there is no reason for it not to work anymore.
There must have something in between to make it not to work anymore.
Question is what may be that "something" that make it not to work.

Let's start from something simple before we go nut and take apart your
computer...

1) there is a MEM86 something test program out there. It runs in DOS. Get
one and test both yours and your computer's memory.
2) If your memory is ok, try to remember what you did before your computer
goes nut.
3) If your computer's memory is ok, can you boot to safe mode and run stuff?
4) Can you run "regedit" in Safe Mode?
5) Have you scanned for virus?
6) Have you scanned for Spyware?
7) Check the hard disk for error. check for bad sector too. (may take
forever)

Only for the last resource, since you are very likely to lose the data in
this computer.
I myself will take the hard disk out and plug it to a "good" computer and
use the other computer to scan for problem for this hard disk.

So now I checked the memory with mem86. I have 2 modules both 256 MB.
When I ran mem86 with both modules I got errors and then removed one
and with one module it tjecks out fine. So I start up windows, and
nothing has changed :(

So I try to remember what I was doing before it crashed... If I am not
mistaken I was running Windows Update when it started acting up!!

No matter what kind of Mode I start windows in - safemode or normal -
it comes up with the same message: unexpected error!!

I then tried to find a virus scanner that can be run in dos mode,
since this seems to be my only way of launching a program. But I
cannot find a virus program that seems to be uptodate!!

The only thing I have not done yet is to check the harddisk for
errors... Is there any good program for that out there in cyberspace?

Thanx so much for your help so far :)
- it is appreciated!
