Does anyone know why almost none of the system restores will actually
restore a system? I have a WinXP Home system that I want to restore to
an earlier time. There are several dates highlighted indicating restore
points that are available. But when I try almost any of them, all
appears to go OK, but at the end when the system reboots, I get a
message that says the system can't restore with that point, try another.

Hi

One or more of the System Restore files could have been corrupted - try
turning SR off/on - but I'm afraid that you will lose any existing
checkpoints:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC. After
that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all
drives' and reboot your PC again. After that 2nd reboot you should have one
new SR checkpoint.

Jimbo,

your system has a defect. Unfortunately it is difficult to
pinpoint the cause and probably impossible to repair for the
current restore points.

Some of the most unreliable pieces of software I've seen are
backup software and even more so restore software, exactly where
you need reliability most. Sad truth.

You may have to tackle your problem directly if System Restore
does not work. Perhaps you have to start a new thread here,
describing the actual problem.

My Dell PC behaved in the exact same way. I'm not sure that I EVER got
System Restore to restore successfully. I have up, turned the thing off,
and got a copy of PowerQuest Drive Image 7, which has always worked like a
charm. I have since upgraded to Norton Ghost 9 (which is the follow-on to
DI 7 now that Symantec owns PowerQuest). It has all the features of DI7
plus it now has incremental imaging as well. It goes for around $90, but
there are frequently mail-in rebates. It is well worth the money.
