WinXP stuck

I have a problem with a WinXP computer. When I turn it on it starts to boot
up as usual, but then it gets to a Welcome screen with one User button on it
(my username). I never saw this screen before, because only one user is
defined. Clicking on the button causes a temporary blanking of the screen and
then a return to the Welcome screen. The only thing I can do from this
screen is shut down the computer.

I tried booting to the last good boot, and also to Safe Mode, but in both
cases I get the same Welcome screen. I also tried reinstalling Windows (on
top of the old installation) from the original (legal) CD, but I still get
the same Welcome screen.

Does anyone have any idea of a way to fix this problem? I can reformat the
drive and reinstall WinXP (all of my data files are on a separate drive,
which is OK), but maybe there is a simpler (faster) solution.

Solution 1:

* click Start > Run > type control userpasswords2, click Ok

* uncheck 'Users must enter a user name & password to use this computer',
click OK

Solution 2:

* open TweakUI

* expand (+) the 'Logon' tab on the menu

* click to highlite 'Autologon'

It's a great site but the LogOnFix program can only be run under Windows, and
my problem is that I can't get into Windows.

My problem is that I can't get into Windows, so this doesn't help me.
Thanks anyway.
