WinXP Shutdown Hang

I'm working my way through Microsoft's KB article fixes and need two WnXP
Service Pack-2 files. One is hidclass.sys (ver. 5.1.2600.32), the other is
winlogon.exe (ver. 5.1.2600.41). The KB's say these files are included in
SP-2, but they aren't in all cases, like mine. My SP-2 has older versions and
Windows Update can't figure that out. So, does anyone have a source for
these files? My shutdown hangs are intermittent. If anyone has any other
fixes than Microsoft's KB articles, I'm interested as well.

What errors are you seeing that cause you to conclude that you need to
replace these files?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Thanks for the feedback Gerry, but my Event Viewer is always error free and I
have UPH Clean installed. The KB articles recommending updated files have no
error messages indicated as a symptom. The first thing I'm trying is to
increase the registry WaitToKillAppTimeout from 20 to 25 seconds (KB305788).
I'll know if it worked in a week or two.

You have told me half the story. What's the rest? Which programme
takes overlong to close?

I have no idea which program is long to close. It hangs on the final "Windows
Is Shutting Down" view with no ending program messages during the shutdown
process.

HMT

The last program that closes in Event Viewer is Spysweeper and UPH Clean
takes it down.

If you disable Spy Sweeper what impact does that have on the shutdown
time?

What version of Spy Sweeper ? How long have you had it?

Hope this helps.

SpySweeper version is the latest - 5.2.3.2132. If I don't load SpySweeper at
startup, it only saves about 3 seconds on shutdown. I've had SpySweeper since
6/24/05, but have had random shutdown hangs for about a year with about 5
SpySweeper version updates since.

HMT

SpySweeper Support provided the solution below. UPHClean is no longer having
to close SpySweeper since this fix and I've had no shut-down hangs since. I
don't have SpySweeper with AntiVirus, so this fix apparently does not reduce
the security of my version of SpySweeper.

1. Open the Spy Sweeper window and click the Home button.
2. Place the mouse cursor on the large, black and white Spy Sweeper with
AntiVirus icon just to the right of the home button. Hold the Ctrl and Alt
keys down on the keyboard at the same time and double-click on the Spy
Sweeper with AntiVirus icon. This will reveal six hidden buttons.
3. Next, click the button, "Turn SPS Off." After doing so, the button should
now read, "Turn SPS On."

Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus has a hidden feature called the Self-Protect
Shield, or SPS. This prevents Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus from being shut down
by hijackers or other spyware attempting to disable your Spy Sweeper with
AntiVirus protection.

HMT

You most likely need to turn SPS off if you ever need to use System
Restore to restore to an earlier time!
