Morning,

I remotely manage a number of WINDOWS 2000 servers remotely from my
home office. I have a cable modem attached to a SIEMANS CABLE
ROUTER/FIREWALL. I have two computers attached to this router:
WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION & WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL. Now both setups
are completely patched and up to date with working virus protection as
well. For months I have been able to remotely VPN into my clients
networks and use Remote Desktop Connection successfully with a WINDOWS
2000 Terminal Server. I can successfully VPN into client networks
from my WINXP HOME computer and then run the RDC with no problem.
However, with the WINXP PRO computer I can successfully VPN into
client networks but I can not run RDC successfuly. I receive a black
screen that will eventually time out on me. I have also simulated
this problem on various client networks and I have narrowed it down to
the WINXP PRO laptop computer. I am at a loss for this problem that
has developed, I know it is not a black hole router due to another
computer working successfully on it.

Any ideas, no matter how bizarre would greatly help! Thanks.

When your XP Pro computer connects Via VPN, does it automatically get an IP
Address from the server or does it have its own set? Your problem is most
likely related to DNS issues. I'd take a closer look at the log files to
see what happens when your laptop logs in via VPN.
