WinXP SP1

I created an extended partion, no problem. When I then
tried to create a 10gig logical in that extened partition
the partition wizard comes up. At the point where it asks
for the size I was told a maximum of 65nnn megs and a
minimum of 8 megs. Using the two little arrows beside the
text box to adjust the value, it went from the min. of 8
megs and topped out at 779 megs. ??? It wouldn't allow me
to go to the maximum of 65nnn. ??? I did manage to find a
workaround but I am curious what this "bug" is?

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that is empty.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8 (www.powerquest.com), can be used with a drive
that already has Windows XP installed.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows XP installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8
(www.powerquest.com).

Otherwise, a "clean install" will be required.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition(s), then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

I should add to this.

Brand new 80gig drive. Installed WinXP Pro to 10gig
partition (primary) and left the remainder unpartitioned
for later.

Went into Disk Managment and created an extended
partition using what was left (65gigs) with no problems.
The problem was creating the logical partition using the
partition wizard, as I stated below.

Once you formatted the remainder of the partition, then you
cannot subsequently create another partition within that partition
using XP's DiskPart utility. You should have created your partitions
before formating the partition as one partition.

Hi Nicholas,

I like your responses. Well covered.

Just a slight modification of this one and it is a special circumstance. If
the user has access to Windows PE through their MS chain, Diskpart can be
used to extend the partition if the system has been booted into PE (on
alternate media). There may be fine tuning of the commands that I have not
tried, but I have extended 4GB Primary Partition as C: to a 37GB partition.
I assume the requirement is NTFS. It was as easy as Diskpart; Select Disk
0; Select Partition 1; Select Volume 1; Extend; exit. The system had to
restart a second time to complete the operation after I exited (plug and
play)
