What are the chances of WinXP working on an older HP Pavilion 8560 that came
with Win98. 256MB of RAM.

I'm no so much talking about speed (533 MHz CPU) as I am ability to get the
OS up and running. Will drivers be a problem, CD-ROM, DVD, modem, etc?

I checked the HP site and they offer no XP drivers.

I'm looking for the reliability of WinXP.

Thanks....

If it's like my older pavilion (4355) with the Riptide sound card/modem...
there are drivers available (use the 2k ones) but you'll be happier with a
replacement sound card and modem.

CD, DVD, those should be fine.

Video - seem to recall having no problems, just that the "shared" video
wasn't that great and took RAM away from the system. Not an issue if you
have a seperate video card.

Pretty good, but is there a real reason you need to upgrade to XP on this
system?
Check the link below for HP's recommendation.

For the record, I think you would be better off spending the money on an
entry level XP system with probably 2 to 3 times better specs and create a
network with your current system. After factoring in the cost of the XP
upgrade, plus the unmentioned/hidden costs of upgrading software and
hardware not compatible with XP and the possible loss of functionality with
the XP upgrade, upgrading an obsolete system to XP looks like a bad
investment.

Hi, I moved my HP Pavilion 8580C (PIII @ 500 with 128M) to XP Pro from 98SE. Increased memory to 256M and did a clean install. I had trouble with the Netropa Keyboard but found a W2k driver that worked fine. I don't recall having other trouble (except with my HP Scanner 4200C and HP Printer 722). The box runs on my home network and serves as my web and email server (Apache and James respectively) with MySQL and PHP. I ultimately solved the printer problem but the scanner still causes problems (memory leaks and lamp stays on). I took a lightning strike about a year ago and have replaced the sound card and modem.

Go to www.pcpitstop.com and run the on-line "XP readiness
test" (link on sidebar). It will scan your hardware and
software and report what you need to do to upgrade, from
BIOS to applications.

Also, get AIDA32 http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
or the Bel Arc Advisor www.belarc.com
These free programs will report on your system, with the
actual name of the mobo mfg'r, and other details that you
will want/need to upgrade drivers and hardware.

Be aware that HP often modifies their hardware by cutting
jumper pins off the mobo so you can't alter the system. HP
BIOS are some what different than the BIOS the mobo maker
has also, this is because HP restore looks at the BIOS to
check if it is an HP machine.

I agree.

Replace the Riptide sound and modem.

I have been running XP on my 8560C for a long time with no
problems.
I took out the modem (use lan for 'net access). Modems are cheap
these days anyway.
Replaced sound with SoundBlaster PCI 16 card a long time ago for
about $25 and have had good results.

Run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

Thanks for all the tips.

This is not my PC. I talked with the owner and we're going to give it a
try.

If the results are unsatifactory I'll put together a new machine for her
that I know will like WinXP. Can always move WinXP to the new system.
