I have a 2.5 drive from a disabled laptop which I am using as drive J, mostly
for storage & backup, on my Dell desktop. This drive had winxp on it which
was deleted when I formatted it. Can i put winxp back on it? It was from a
gateway laptop and I have all the disks. If not, can I put the the windows
media edition from my desktop on it?

No and no.
The XP license that came with the Gateway laptop is likely OEM and can be
used on that laptop only.
The Media Center license on your Dell is also likely OEM and can be used
only on that Dell, even if it wasn't OEM (if it was retail, which I don't
think Media Center is available in), you can only have it installed on one
PC at a time

I guess the answer to your question depends on what you want to do with the
drive once you install XP on it. If it's intended as a way around buying
another copy - the answer is NO. But if it's to replace a worn out hard
drive in your Dell - the answer is "maybe". Or if it's for the Gateway
laptop that it came out of - then the answer is likely "Yes" If it's for any
other system, then answer is a resounding "No".

If I correctly understand you, all you want to do, in effect, is to back up
your current Dell desktop's system by copying the contents of that system to
your 2 1/2" HDD. Presumably you would be using some disk imaging program to
create this copy? Do I have this right? Or maybe your plan is to somehow
make a fresh install of the Dell desktop's OS onto that 2 1/2" HDD?

If either is your objective, then there is no problem with doing so. There
would be no violation of the MS license agreement in that type of situation
assuming that the backup HDD was being used in the same machine as your
current Dell desktop and that it wouldn't be installed in a different PC.

What exactly are you trying to do? Do you want this drive to be the only
drive in a system with XP on it?

OEM versions of XP are tied to the first computer on which it's installed so
the Gateway OEM version that had been on that drive can be reinstalled on
that drive if that drive is in the gateway laptop. That OS can't be
installed on any drive in another computer.

The MCE edition that is on the desktop is also OEM. It can be put on that
drive if it's first removed from the drive on which it's installed and the
new drive on which it's installed is used as the boot drive in the original
computer that the MCE came with.

Another conditions is that there can only have one current installation of
XP per license.
