WinXp install fails

I'm working on a friend's PC (Compaq Presario 7471) that was infected with trojans. I was able to clean infection, but unable to open any file using Win Explorer nor IE. System restore disc was not an option because there is over 20 gigs of data that needs to be saved. So I tried upgrading it to Win XP. Setup goes fine until there is 34 minutes left for installing, it then restarts PC and goes into disc scanning. After that continues with install and restarts at the same "34 min left". It does that over and over. I tried to go into safe mode and all other options that you get with F8, but same thing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Try removing everything that is not necessary for Installation. The less
Device Drivers XP has to deal with
on Install the better. Set the Bios to Optimal Settings. Have the Drive
as Master by itself on the Primary
IDE channel.

Run the Compatibility Test before installing XP.
It should give you a list of items to remove if any.

Did you do install or upgrade?

As long as you dont format your data will still be there,
you may need to reinstall some apps, and you may lose
some settings, but your data will be OK.

Wish i could do anything: it keeps cycling, and if i remove installation disc, it asks for it. Then i tried canceling out of there, but it restarts PC, goes thru scanning HD and it tries to continue with setup

I had the same problem.
I tried to update.
It also stopped at 34 minutes
I restarted the computer
The screen went blank with only the mouse cursor.

This is what I will do in this situration.
1) plug the hard disk to another computer
2) copy the stuffs you want to the other computer
3) plug the old hard disk back to the Compaq
4) boot the XP CD
5) format the old hard disk with the XP CD
6) reinstall from there

I guess this is my only option. The only problem is I don't have desktop PC that I could put HD into (have some old Pentium class), but will finf something. Was your HD working OK after that?
Thanks for your help
