WinXP Home fails to install

I have an upgrade version of WinXP Home and a Win98 CD to use during the
install.

I have tried two times, the install failed in the same place both times.

During the second reboot the Windows Logo with the sliding green bar beneath
it comes up and moves across 1-1/2 times and everything stops. No more HD
activity and the video output shuts down as indicated by the monitor.

The system boots in Safe Mode, but I have no idea what to do in there to fix
this problem.

I tried to install on a totally different system and it works fine. Goes
right up to the activation screen where I stopped so as not to use up the CD
Key.

Could this be a damaged disk? Because of the difference in hardware,
different config files are required for the different systems and possibly
damaged files are required for the first system and not the second.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Most likely your first system has hardware that's incompatible with XP
while the second does not. The install CD is probably OK. The usual
culprit is video. Swap the video card out if possible and try again.
If the first system has an on board video chip, go into the CMOS setup
screens and shut it down. Of course you'll need to install a video
card at the same time.

Try booting to xp cd,select install xp,new copy, delete the
partition(s),create
one, then xp formats & does a clean install.XP doesnt use any 98 programs or
files,+ 98 is in FAT32 file system,xp uses NTFS.....

Another bogus reply, Andrew E. XP will work on either FAT32 or NTFS.

Andrew E., our resident troll, strikes again.

Nonsense, Andrew. Windows XP does not simply "use NTFS." Windows XP uses
NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, and FAT12, in any and all combinations--separately or
together-- and regardless of what file system it itself is installed on.

I apologize.

The system it will not load on had WinXP Pro running on it for 3 years.
until last week when I build a new machine. I formatted the system
partition with NTFS before attempting to install this new version of WinXP
Home.

It is a totally "clean" install.

Perhaps the partition or hard drive is too large, if you're using the
original XP version. That is, not SP1. Not SP2, otherwise the bar would
have been blue not green.

Or, perhaps, needs drivers for SATA or otherwise, watch for F6 prompt at XP
installation.

For corporate legal advice regarding the EULA for XP, check with a lawyer
qualified in corporate law.

The CD is the original version without SP1 or SP2

Using PATA drives, didn't need any special drivers loaded at F6 for WinXP
Pro.

What is the max partition size for non-SP1/SP2? I'm using a 120GB drive
with just the one partition. Wouldn't Windows warn during installation if
the partition size is too large?

Thanks....

127 GB is the largest size. Anything over that size is not usable.
XP non SP does know about drives larger that 127 GB, so no, you will not get
a warning.
The drive will probably be formatted to 127 GB.

Case closed.

I loaded Windows using another CD and the key that belongs to the original
CD with no problems.

Great, glad it's fixed for you and thanks for posting back the resolution.

FYI, the product key doesn't not "belong" to a particular CD. Any CD of
that version will work. So, for example, any CD for retail XP Pro, full
version, will work with a product key for retail XP Pro full version. There
is nothing unique about the CD within a particular version.

Retail v. Generic OEM, v. branded OEM, v. Volume license
Home v. Pro.
Language version.
