I upgraded from Win98SE to WinXP Home Edition. Is there a way to take some
of the unused space on the c-drive and create an extended partition from the
unused space (then create logical drives in the extended partition)?

You can start over using Fdisk from Win98 to create partitions, but you will
have to reinstall XP.
OR
Acquire Partition Magic version 8, to change partitions on the fly without
losing any pre installed programs.

You can use the Disk Management snap-in to partition and format the rest of
your drive.
Start|Run|diskmgmt.msc
