WinXP Home & 98SE Network problem

Hi All,

I have a two computer network XP Home & 98SE sharing DSL through a Linksys
Router/4 port switch.

Internet connections work fine.

In Network Neighborhood on the SE box I can see all the shares, on both
boxes (XP & SE).

I can ping to and from each machine.

I can use the printer attached to the SE box from the XP box.

If I run \\ipaddress of the SE box in the command window of the XP box I do
get a window of the SE shares, however, that's the only time and place I can
see the shares of the SE box.

Shouldn't there be another Folder(?)/Place I can see the shares of the SE
box?

In my quest to solve this problem I've seen many mentions of a folder called
"My Network Places", I don't have that folder on the XP machine.

I do have "Network Connections" Icon in the control panel and Desktop, it
shows the Local Area connection, adapter, and enabled, and the other default
connection info.

I have ICF disabled, and both are behind the software firewall, Zone Alarm,
each box's adapters are listed in the firewall's trusted zone.

What have I missed in the setup?

Thanks for your time,

David.

David,

Definitely sounds like a browser service / name resolution problem. Can you
ping each machine by name from the other?

Ensure that Zone Alarm is enabled, and the following ports are open in the Local
Zone only for browsing and file sharing: TCP 139, 445; UDP 137, 138, 445.

Please post ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck

Hello David;
I have an identical set of connections. I had to disable ZoneAlarm on all
machines to get the Network running OK. So far, getting rid of ZoneAlarm has
not been a security disaster.....which is what I feared. Apparently the
router has a firewall within its circuitry to block nasty stuff coming in on
the Internet. I hope it works for you.

Hi Chuck, and all,

Yes I can ping each machine by name.

Zone Alarm Standard does not allow me to configure ports.

Here's the ip info.

Thanks for the reply.

Any and all suggestions welcome,

David.

David,

You're running IP6 on Adrienne. Try removing that.

WRT Zone Alarm Standard, either un install it (totally, following all
procedures) or replace it with Zone Alarm Pro. ZAS doesn't provide enough
options to support file sharing restricted to the local LAN. Some versions have
a Paranoia Level (Security Level?) setting - try changing from High to Medium if
possible. Otherwise upgrade or do without - you're protected somewhat by the
NAT router (this is a wired LAN, right?).

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Chuck, Melvin & all

I've tried uninstalling ZA and had no different results.
I've Changed security settings to medium and low, no different results

I tried IP6 just as I've been pulling at many straws.
It's now removed and I still have the same problems.

I noticed node type in ipconfig below is now 'unknown' whereas before it was
'broadcast' does this give us a clue?
This is the iponfig after removing IP6.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again,

David.

David,

My money is still on ZA as the problem.

My Windows XP computers are both node type Unknown too. Here's an article about
Node Type: <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160177>.

You wouldn't be the first person to report problems with file sharing after un
installing ZA. You may have to re install ZA, enable it, then un install it
again, carefully, to get it to un install it properly. Get updated un install
instructions from ZA too.

If you enter \\david from the Run window of Adrienne, what exact error do you
get? What do you get from \\DavidIPAddress?

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I'll try un-installing again.

I don't get any errors from Run window \\David. I get a window showing the
shares on the SE box(David)

I get 'can't find network path' from Run window \\DavidIPAddress or
\\David192.168.1.100
but both those seem obvious (if I understood you correctly).

I'll report back after I've had a chance to un-install ZA.

Thanks for the suggestions,

David.

I was having the same problems as decribed in this thread. Was getting frustrated with all the "helps". Got rid of Zone Alarm and all is well. Thanks guys for the fix.
