Hi Gerry,
Pls take a look at this paragraph:
[Excerpted from Resource Kit]
Prefetching is further improved if the files are located next to each other
on the outer edge of the disk. Windows XP Professional optimizes the
location of boot files and applications when the computer is idle. The
optimization occurs in the background and lasts only a minute or two; you
might hear the hard disk being accessed when optimization occurs. After the
initial optimization takes place, subsequent optimization occurs, at most,
every three days.

Therefore, apart from the auto-optimization for every 3 days, there is also
an "initial optimization" that takes place when the system is idle. IIRC,
when the system is idle for a long time, defragmentation starts
automatically (dfrgntfs.exe / dfrgfat.exe process running - seen in Task
Manager). I don't know if it occurs every three days, or if that's called
"initial optimization". Perhaps the questioner Robert is referring to these
two processes?
And if the Master is watching this thread, he would jump in with some
additional insight.

Ramesh isn't this supposed only to be done
every 3 days?
Robert are you complaining about something
that may only occur every 3 days?
