I'm planning to do a clean reinstall and have a CD for SP2 and for
almost all of the updates that Windows Update has suggested since then.
After SP2, does it matter in what order they are installed? Can I
hope to just sort them numerically (i.e. KB896424 before KB905749)? Or
is that too simple in the MS world...

MaryMaryQC, you should create a slipstreamed WinXP + SP2 CD. Check the
ElderGeek's website for how to do this
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

Once everything is installed you can just go to the MS Update Site.
It will list the updates you need. If you have them
then just install them in the order they show up. No need to download
them again.

Thanks for this tip. However, I wanted to do a clean install of XP,
fully update it and then make an image file of it before installing
anything else. I'll do as you suggest if I have to, but I'd prefer to
load up XP and all it's necessary updates before even installing the
network. Any advice would be appreciated.
