WinXP can't recognize HD

I have a Toshiba MK3017GAP HD which I salvaged from a
Compaq laptop whose motherboard died. I bought a USB
enclosure for it so that I could rescue the HD to use as
external additional memory for another laptop. This
laptop runs WinXP, and I can't get it to recognize that
it is even there. When I try to use the Add Hardware
Wizard, XP recognizes that the new hardware is there, but
says there is an error and it may not operate right, and
when I open up Windows Explorer, the drive doesn't appear
there. I tried it on another desktop PC running Win 98,
and it is recognized there. Does anyone know how I can
get WinXP to recognize it on my laptop? I tried getting
updated drivers but that didn't work. The installation CD
that came with the USB enclosure has drivers for Win 98SE
and 2000 but none for WinXP. I went to the Toshiba
website and it said WinXP should recognize the hardware.
