I recently updated my Sony notebook to WinXP SP2. I updated all the drivers
and such from Sony website, but later learned WinXP cannot find the
"msconfig" file from the "Run" line in the Start menu. I did a search and
found the new msconfig.exe file in the PCHealth folder in the Windows
directory, but don't know how to get the OS to find it on its' own. Also, is
this an indicator of a bigger problem?

Hello friend.

I had a bad experence with SP2. Uninstall the service Pack 2 or restore a
good installation (it's created with the system restore)

Bye

Hi,

Start/run cmd

Run PATH from the prompt, post back with the results.

Hi, ran the Path comd from the comd prompt, received the following:
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\System32;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\ATI
Technologies\ATI Control Panel.

Fix the App Paths value for MSCONFIG.EXE

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

In the right-pane, set the (default) to the following:

"C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe"

Change the drive letters/paths accordingly.

It's 6:48 AM and I already learned a new thing for today.

It should find it through its entry in the App Paths of the registry.
At
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

'Default' in the right pane should be set to
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

If it sisn't, double click Default and set it so. (and if need be, in
App Paths use Edit - New - Key to make the MSCONFIG.EXE key)

Mine too Frank, was thinking that the \windows\system32 might be missing,
but it does not seem to be.

Hi,

That's fine, and is not the problem. Is msconfig under:

C:\Windows\PCHealth

or is it here:

C:\Windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries

It should be the latter, not the former. If not in the right location, that
can also cause this problem.

Good catch, Ramesh, I hadn't thought of that.
