Hi

I'm running Windows XP SP1 and have Office 97 installed.

Whenever I view a Word document (.doc) in IE, winword.exe loads (which is
fine). When I close IE though, winword.exe remains loaded and sits there
using 50% CPU even though there is no longer any window displaying a word
doc. I can manually end the process but this is a bit of a pain.

Does anybody have any idea why it's behaving this way, or know of a fix?

Thanks

Chris

Hi,

Why are you trying to open the document in IE itself. Why not use the word application itself to read the documents.

Well obviously I could do that, but if whilst browsing online I come across
a word doc I should be able to read it in IE without having these sort of
problems.

Actually locating such info on the MS website is easier said than done!

There seem to be numerous reports of folks using Office 97 on XP with no
problems, and apart from this issue it seems to work find for me.

Thanks

I found this

Many thanks for that. It does seem to be a useful workround to the problem -
when the doc is opened this way, closing the window does unload winword. I'm
still curious to know why I got the problem in the first place though.

The other thing I noticed with the original problem was that once the window
was closed, as well as winword.exe remaining loaded and using 50% cpu,
csrss.exe used a lot of cpu (~20%) continually.
