Hi Michael,
As Kelly has oh-so-subtly hinted at, most try to avoid the use of html in
newsreaders. The chief reasons for this are that a) it can carry malware
script and b) many newsreaders cannot handle it well (some see it as added
garbage, others see it as an attachment to a plain text post).
For instance, this is part of your reply in plain text:
<start>
Winupd.dll is associated with spyware programs and viruses. Anti-virus
software and firewalls do not fully protect your system against the majority
of spyware and privacy threats. Spyware is commonly bundled with software
downloads, attached to e-mails, or transmitted through networks so it can
appear to be legitimate software, but once installed it can be nearly
impossible to detect and remove without the help of a dedicated spyware
removal tool such as:
Ad-Aware 6.0 (build 6.181)
<end>
And in html for a newsreader that can't decipher it:
<start>
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<HTML><HEAD>
<META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; =
charset=3Diso-8859-1">
<META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2800.1400" name=3DGENERATOR>
<STYLE></STYLE>
</HEAD>

<end>
Makes it pretty difficult to read for the non-html newsreader. While I don't
mind it and can see many benefits to using html, for me the difficulties
outweigh the benefits.
Also, using html adds greatly to the size of the post. While those on
broadband would never notice it, those who pay by the minute for dialup, or
by transfer rate in the many countries that use these groups are forced to
download a 10KB post that could've been done in 4KB. After a while, it adds
up.
The decision, of course, is yours, and many still do continue to use html,
but I though I would point out the rationale for you.
