Mikey

I'm unable to get connected to the internet using a cable
modem. I've been through the troubleshooting steps with
the ISP and end up with the following error message when
trying to renew the IP address....

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area
Connection 3 : An operation was attempted on something
that is not a socket.

I don't know if this is related, but when running Hijack
This the log throws this up.... Broken internet
connection becasuse of LSP
provider "C:\windows|system32|lsp.dll" missing.

Any ideas??

Thanks.

Greetings Mikey,

There is a new netsh command in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) that can
reset the Winsock catalog. Try this command and see if this works for you.

Open the command prompt, then type of the following and press ENTER.

netsh winsock reset catalog

Thanks for your prompt response. I won't be at the PC
until Thursday so I'll have a crack at it then.

Is there anything else I'm likely to have to do or do you
think that's all that'll be required?

Mikey,

yes, you should remove the cause of the problem, the adware or
spyware that caused the problem in the first place.

SpyBot would be a good first choice.
