Winsock 1.1 application really slow on XP

App is DM/Manager (a file management client). Last version updated
about 1995, no longer supported.

It worked ok on NT4 and Win2000, but on XP it's super slow. During file
transfers it causes XP to be almost completely unresponsive (Explorer inputs
take ~1min to show). I've tried running it with different application
compatibilty modes with no change.

Any suggestions to get this dinosaur running a little better will be
greatly appreciated.
