Can anyone explain what WINS is. It has to do with TCP/IP and disabling NET
BIOS. I am with the understanding that NET BIOS has security holes. I have
the instructions To configure To use WINS without NET BIOS. I would like
anyone who can explain all this so I know at least what I am doing when I
attempt this. Last of all, is this safe to do without getting things in a no
go situation?
Thanks, Don

WINS stands for "Windows Internet Name Service", a name resolution system
that is sometimes used on large corporate networks with Windows domains.
For virtually all home and small business networks, the WINS server details
are unnecessary and irrelevant.

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: WINS , and hit enter.
3. Click on "Configure TCP/IP to use WINS.

Hi, Carey,

Like Don, I am attempting to disable NetBIOS on a Toshiba laptop
running XP SP1. I access the internet using a dialup connection. The
problem I have with your answer is
that when I click on "Configure TCP/IP to use WINS" it wants the IP
address of a WINS server, which I don't have. Since I'm using a dialup,
can I safely skip entering a WINS server address?

Thanks.

Dick
