hello everyone,

I just created a new site within my domain and I'm trying to figure out
which services to use at this new site. Should I install the WINS service
on this domain controller or should I just point the DC at Site B to the
WINS (my only WINS server) at Site A? Also, I think there are people at this
site still authenticating over at Site A which I thought once I brought up
my new site under ADSS my clients at Site B would authenticate at Site B,
not Site A? Anyone have documentation on future configurations I should
perform on the DC at Site B?

Thank you
Alex Anderson

What type of clients do you have? Windows 2000 clients and up use DNS to
locate DCs, so your WINS configuration may not be the problem here. The
clients should locate a DC within it's site if your sites are correctly
configured and if the DCs have registered the correct site specific records.
They query DNS for site specific records. You can look for the _ldap
records in the forward lookup zone under the _sites folder. Verify that
they are there. There are a lot of useful resources that discuss how
clients locate DCs and how to setup sites. Here are a few links to get you
started

Tim,

Thank you for the information. Let me clarify my question. At the new
site, do I set up a new WINS server at that site? And as far as DNS goes,
on the DC at this new site do I install a new primary DNS or just run it as
a secondary zone? I would think secondary and that's how I have it set up.
Also, at this point, my clients are not getting a WINS server because I
don't have one specified in DHCP because I'm not sure if I should create a
new one or use the existing one at my primary site. Basically what I'm
asking is, what is the typical setup for the DC at a new site within AD?
What services should it have installed and with what type of set up?

Thank you
Alex Anderson

You should setup a WINS server at the site and make it a push/pull partner
with the existing WINS server. DNS at the other site should be a secondary
DNS zone or AD integrated zone. There isn't a typical setup. It varies
based on your needs and network. The AD Branch office deployment guide goes
over a lot of these concepts and should help you decide what you need. It
is available online at
