winnt32 illegal operation on install

I am currently using Windows 98 second edition and have
tried to upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional. I have the
disk. Every time I try, it gets to a certain point and
then gives me the error message: Winnt32 this program has
performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If
problem persists, contact vendor. I have tried wading
through the online support and have gotten no where.
Anyone out there have any ideas on what the problem may
be? Many thanks.
 
Victoria, Have you tried to change cd rom drives ?? some
times the older cd roms have issues with reading cd's..
