Philippa

I sent an RTF email in outlook express without an
attachment. The recipient emailed back to say my email
had arrived with an attachment: 'winmail4dat', which she
could not open (when she tried it warned that it was an
illegal function). Any clues? and what does the file
extension .dat stand for? Thanks.

The Winmail.dat file is used to preserve formatting that
the sending client includes in the message, but is not
recognized by the receiving client. In this case
Winmail.dat file includes Rich Text Formatting (RTF)
instructions.

Format messages in plain text to avoid this.
