Hi All

Bit of a minor issue with Win Mail ... it's something stupid and simple I'm
sure but I'm used to Outlook.

I am getting email fine - but for whatever reason NO attachments show up AND
I KNOW the message has them. This isn't just word docs but PDF and JPG's.

Any ideas on how I can fix this simple issue?

Thanks
Geoff

Is the sender using Outlook? Outlook has a format that is not compatible
with anything else. Look at the source code of that message (Ctrl-F3).
Do you see a bunch of random characters, preceded by a filename like
winmail.dat? If so, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/138053

Also, make sure you have attachments enabled: Tools, Options, Security,
uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

Yes the sender (me) was using Outlook (2003 SP3 to be exact).

I just bought a HP laptop - and was trying to send email from my old
computer to the new one. This is how I found the attachment issue.

I checked the source code - and do not see anything that looks 'odd' - and
nothing that states winmail.dat - I also already unchecked the attachment box
under the security settings.

I'm not so sure I like Winmail ....

Windows Mail works just fine for most people. :-)
When you looked at the source code, what did you see?
Any evidence of an attachment? Does it show the paperclip symbol?

Okay - I stand corrected! I went further down the page and found where it
says winmail.dat

Sounds like I'm out of luck eh ... since I have no way of controlling what
programe people use to send emails with

Damn

As far as I know, Outlook is the only common email program that
sends attachments in a proprietary format. Perhaps you can educate
the clueless Outlook senders to use the more compatible plain text or
HTML format. However, if you expect much of your incoming email
to come from Outlook users, you may have to bite the bullet and
purchase Outlook for yourself.

As Gary indicates, it only is a problem when the senders use RTF format
instead of plain text or HTML format. So you can ask them to resend it in
one of the other formats.

Perfect - thanks guys I do appreciate your assistance.

I'm kind of suprised tho that Microsoft made both programs and they are not
100% compatiable with each other.

Again - appreciate your assistance

Just as it's always been - RTF is a proprietary Outlook format....

Microsoft meant those two programs to be used by different user groups.
Outlook is for business use, and OE/WM/WLM is for home users.
As such it is understandable that the free email program has a much
smaller feature set.
