When I receive an email which contains a hyperlink to a website and click on
the hyperlink I'm receiving a message, in a small message box, that Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shutdown.

If I open Internet explorer manually before clicking on the hyperlink then a
new tab opens in Internet Explorer and the hyperlink connects properly.

Ran Windows update and all fixes are installed.

Can anyone give me a hint as to how to remedy this?

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. See this
article first:

3. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

You might also try the steps here:
"Internet Explorer stops responding, stops working, or restarts"

You can try resetting IE. That will wipe out all your cookies,
so you may want to export those first.
To reset IE: Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Reset.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll take a look at what you suggest.

This is a brand new Vista machine, I removed some software (ie. demo of MS
office etc.) and installed only one program called Shaw Secure (from
internet providor) other than that is is a "clean" machine.

Thanks again,
Tony

"clean" depends a lot on who made the computer. Most big names load a lot
of extra crop, mush of which actually interferes with proper operation, like
Norton, NcAfee and all sorts of utilities and add-ons.
