I am hoping someone may be able to advise me.

I don't know what the file winlogon.exe actually does, but at times when I
am downloading info from the internet (today attempting to use the start
menu 'help and support from microsoft' and with yahoo messenger) this file
grows until it is so big it fills up memory, rendering it impossible to
undertake any other tasks. I can go from using 844k of memory to well over
100,000k. I have obtained this information fro the processes tab of task
manager. When things are working well it seems to stay around the 3,372k
range

I have 512mb of RAM and am only using about 20gb of 80gb on the hard drive.

The computer has been infected with some adware/spyware, which I have
cleaned with an updated pestpatrol, which now indicates that I am pest free,
tho' I would not like to guarantee that. An unrequested web page opened just
now as I opened the microsoft help web site from the start menu 'help and
support from microsoft'. I am wondering if a pest program may have
infiltrated the winlogon.exe file?

Another indication of what is going wrong may be the amount of time it takes
to get from the login screen to the desktop (we have 3 users on this
computer). It used to take very little time, then suddenly one day it
started to take much longer, considerably longer.

Is winlogon.exe corrupt? How can I resolve this issue.

I am at wits end over this problem. I hope I have described the problem
adequately. I am using xp professional, although I am a home user on a home
computer.

I thank anyone who may take the time to read this message, and would be so
grateful to receive a reply.

Yours
Garry Convery
