After a thunder and lightning storm, the computer hasn't
functioned properly since (month ago). It seems like it
takes 2 to 3 times longer to do anything, ie boot up,
shut down, etc. In addition, things within Window don't
seem to operate properly, ie I just clicked on "My
Computer" it opens ok, then I right clicked on drive A
(nothing)Minute or so later, I ctrl/alt/delete click on
end task. Result "not responding". This type of things
happens every day. What I would like to do is do a total
reformat of the hard drive, and start over. What kind of
disk do I need to be able to boot up and reload
everything? I was told a normal "boot disk" won't work.
The computer's original operating system was WindowsMe,
which I installed XPpro over that(upgrade). Is the Me
going to have to be reinstalled, and then XP over it?
THANKS!

If your computer experienced a power surge during the storm, your hardware
may have suffered damage, inwhich case no amount of reinstalling is going to
help. Always use a UPS with a computer, and don't use your computer at all
during a lightning storm. In fact, during a lightning storm many people
unplug their hardware from the wall socket.

You don't need to install ME first, but you do need to have your ME CD
handy. Windows XP will ask you to insert the ME CD to prove that you qualify
for the upgrade version of Windows.
