I installed the service pack. But everytime I open Internet Explorer from my
desktop, the pop-up Windows Installer appears and says "preparing to install"
This also happens when I click the the "my computer" icon. This occurs
everytime I click I want to access them. This never happend before. Also, I
tired to use the System Restore but it doesn't work anymore either because
for some reason it can't find a suitable date as a backup time.
Can nah one help me fix this ?

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. In answer to your questions, Kelly, that's
what I would like know. This only occurs on some of my Microsoft
Applications and no others. Since I last wrote this email, even when I
click to open up the "Recycle Bin" the windows installer menu gives the same
message, stays on about 5 seconds, disappears, and then the icon opens. This
is so weird that while I am in I.E., the installer message appears even when
I click on web page links.
So what is it trying to install? Beats me. I run Norton Antivirus and
always keep it current and updated.
I also checked this website about Windows Installer information and
it was too technical for me to understand but I did get some of the meaning.
It seems as though the registry may goofed up or something like that. I am
not an expert but not an novice either. It may be something I have to live
with or until the mighty Bill Gates comes up with a solution. But I don't
like not having to restore my computer if something serious goes wrong. By
the way, I did reinstall Service Pack 2 to see if this would help--no change.

Thanks for the great feedback. If you have SpywareGuard installed, disable
it and try again.

I have a similar problem, except in my case, the pop up says it is initiating
the installation of Money2002. I already have Money2002 in my system, except
it got disabled as soon as I installed SP2. The installation attempt stops
when it discovers I don;t have the Money2002 disk in my CD ROM drive, but
then the whole thing starts over again, and it is impossible to X it out. a

Well I had to take drastic measures. I don't advise this for anyone
unless it is a MAJOR problem!! I assumed that my msi.dll file was not
updated or corrupt. Definitely my Registry had corrupt files. My software
applications wouldn't reinstall. I had to Re-Install WinXP. This was no
picnic at all because I had to use WinXP boot up floppies. Yeah, right!!
On boot up, files detected were corrupt and solved but this took my computer
back to the stone-age. Talk about updating and security fixes needed to get
it back in shape. At least my System Restore is working now as well. This
Service Pack 2 was a major mess!!
Is WinXP Service 2 worth it now...heck no in my opinion. So next time a
service pack comes out, I will definitely BACK-UP my hard drive!!!

You should have a backup of your drives at all times -- service pack
upgrade or not. It's not a matter of if but _when_ data loss occurs.
That's just plain old smart safe computing. If you had an image of your
system, then recovering would have been a snap.
