Hi,
I am trying to install WindowsXP Home (pre-service pack edition) on a
new computer. After the install, and as soon as I connect to the
internet, the computer gets attacked by all sorts of spyware/adware
before I can even download and install the many windows updates
(including SP2). As a result, the system processes utilize 100% of the
CPU and the system slows to a crawl / standstill.

Does anybody have any idea how I can get and install the necessary
windows updates before this barrage of spyware infects my computer? It
seems most spyware programs require me to be online to update before
they install, and by then it's too late.

TIA

You should install SP2 prior to connecting to the
internet, or, at least, enable Windows XP's firewall
immediately.

Download Ad-aware SE and scan your PC for the presence of spyware:

Make a SP2 slipstreamed version of Windows XP,
then use the new CD to install or repair Windows XP in
the future.

(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

If you have a broadband connection to the internet (e.g. cable, ADSL) don't
have it connected while installing XP. If possible buy/borrow a router and
once XP is installed hook up the router to your broadband connection and
then your pc to the router. Once connected to the internet through the
router the first thing you should do is the Windows updates. Continue
downloading/installing/re-booting until there are no more critical updates.
If you don't have access to a router then at least turn on the Windows XP
firewall or install another firewall before connecting to the internet. Once
XP is up to date then you can worry about activating, downloading drivers,
etc.

Is there any particular reason the you're not enabling WinXP's built-in
firewall *before* connecting to the Internet? It seems to me that
you're actually inviting the intrusions, if you're not bothering with
normal precautions.

Does anybody have any idea how I can get and install the necessary

Enable the firewall.

Do you know of anyone else that has a computer that can access the
Internet or do you have a second computer that does?? If so, you
could download the full SP2, burn it to a CD or USB storage device and
install it offline (after installing the pre-service pack edition).

In my opinion, this should go out in printed form with all new computers.
It should also be bundled with any Windows XP software.

Internet Storm Center: "If you know of someone who is about to receive a
new computer, or if you have received one yourself, please, please read our
new Windows XP survival guide, 'Windows XP: Surviving the First Day. (PDF)'"

Thanks Wesley,
I followed the instructions in the survival guide, and I was able to
install XP Home and update with SP2, no problem.
Thanks again
