i have 2k pro runnin and i installed xp along with it to
duel boot well when i did i can boot to xp but i get an
error when i boot to 2k error is: Windows could not start
beceause the following file is mising or corrupt:
\winnt\system32\config\system
so i log on xp go to \winnt\system32\config\system and i
replace it with a old system and system.alt file from
\winnt\repair and then reboot and i can boot to 2k and xp
fine but when i reboot the system will give me the error
when i try to boot to windows 2k again but i can still
boot to xp fine

Did you install XP in a seperate partition or drive? If both W2K and XP are
installed in the same drive, same partition, same folder, you do not have a
dual-boot, you had an upgraded installation. The key word here is "had".

A dual-boot implies, by definition, a seperate partition for both operating
systems. You may find it worthwhile to read the read me files that acompany
the XP operating system in relation to what an upgrade is as opposed to a
dual-boot scenario.

It might shed some light into issues like whether XP is Pro or Home version
and what your options are.
 
yes it does. i get the msg when i try to boot to windows
2000 but i can log on win xp and put an old system and
system.alt files in the folder then reboot and at boot
loader i select windows 2000 and it will boot to it and
then it will reinstall all my devices then if i reboot it
will give me the msg again
 
Besides the seperate partition, are both OS(s) located within the 8GB mark?
Partition Size
Size required = Minimum space required for each OS installation +
Amount of space required for your
applications +
Working space (typically, at least 500MB to
1GB)

You can have shared applications (example MS Office) on a third logical
drive for both W2K & XP to access if size is a factor.
